De Gea has been been linked repeatedly with a move to Real Madrid but talks of a Sergio Ramos transfer to United have complicated any move Madrid were trying to make.
The Spanish goalkeeper and the Argentinian defender have been team-mates for 12 months now and while Rojo spoke kindly of De Gea, he was unwilling to expand on any transfer speculation.
Speaking to Goal.com, Rojo said: “If David is not the best goalkeeper in the world today, then he is very close. He has adapted really well to the Premier League this past year.
“He is at an incredible level – I see him day, in, day out and he is an outstanding goalkeeper. As I say, if he is not the best in the world today, he is very close. I am very happy he is being recognised because he is a great goalkeeper.
“Ever since I came to the club he has treated me as a brother. I’m very happy for his present moment and whatever lies ahead for him, I wish him the best.”
Nothing any team-mate can say at this stage will probably be able to persuade De Gea to change his mind, regardless of what decision he has made.
Fans, and team-mates alike, will obviously be hoping De Gea chooses to stay in Manchester but it is now simply a painful waiting game to find out what happens.
