Nicolas Otamendi’s agent has declared his client will not play for Real Madrid.
The Argentinian central defender had been touted as a replacement in the event of a Sergio Ramos departure but Eugenio Lopez has ruled out the possibility of his client moving to Madrid.
Otamendi was very impressive last season for Valencia and has continued that good form for his country as they made their way through the Copa America and into the final this Saturday against Chile.
Otamendi’s agent Lopez was unequivocal in ruling the possibility of a move to Madrid out. He told Cadena Cope: “Before Sergio Ramos leaves Real Madrid — if he does leave — Otamendi will be already playing for another club.”
There is little doubt that United need a central defender this summer and with any Ramos deal looking like it might drag on for the next few weeks, United might want to keep in contact with Valencia over the possibility of signing of Otamendi.
There are many teams that could do with the kind of no-nonsense, consistent defending that Otamendi brings to the table and with the buy-out clause set at €50 million, there would be nothing that Valencia could do if a team decides to pay the fee.
If United put all their eggs in the one basket with Ramos and he decides to stay at Real Madrid, it might be too late to bring a possible Otamendi deal back to life at that late stage of the window.
However, Ed Woodward is really giving off the impression this summer that everything is will come together. Hopefully he can make it happen.
