This summer, he has vowed to do the same by giving more opportunities to youngsters and one player on his radar is Callum Gribbin.
The 16-year-old midfielder has been training with Man United’s first-team already in the pre-season and is in line for a place on the pre-season tour.
Gribbin had a real impact last season with some strong performances for Man United’s U18s including a superb game against Hull City in the FA Youth Cup.
It was in this game where lots of United fans first heard of him because it was shown live on MUTV but for those who follow the U18s, Gribbin’s name has popped up regularly over the last 12 months.
A tricky and confident player, Gribbin has real self-belief in his style of play and that could be what has caught Van Gaal’s eye.
“If he is good enough, then he is old enough.” It’s a famous phrase coined by Sir Matt Busby which was indicative of his ethos as a manager and Van Gaal shares that same trust in youngsters.
Gribbin has a real opportunity to go on tour and it would be fantastic progression for him to even go on it.
Pereira, McNair, Blackett, Reece James and others have all benefited from opportunities given to the by Van Gaal. Now, it could be Gribbin’s turn.
