Now, it looks as though that hard work has paid off. The Mirror are reporting Van Gaal is absolutely delighted with Shaw for putting in the extra hours during his time off.
It means Shaw will return to Manchester United’s pre-season training with a slimmer frame having lost over 3kg in body weight.
Blunt comments from Van Gaal last summer saw him tell reporters that he felt Shaw wasn’t fit enough and they certainly sound like they have had their desired effect.
Shaw, 19, needs to be at full fitness to operate properly in the full-back role under Van Gaal because of how intensive his style of play is.
There were some points last season where Shaw’s bombarding runs showed United fans a glimpse of what’s to come when he is in full swing. It was glorious to watch.
Now, it’s up to Shaw to work as hard as possible to try and avoid his injury woes from last season because they acted as a real roadblock for his progress as a player at the club.
However, judging by his work in the summer, Shaw is ready to commit and give everything to improve himself, so United could reap the rewards of that this year.
