Both Shaw and Depay have very big season ahead of themselves at Manchester United, albeit if for different reasons.
Last year, Shaw joined Man United for a fee in the region of £30m and subsequently became the world’s most expensive teenager when he made the move.
Unfortunately for the 19-year-old, his first year in red didn’t quite go to plan. A series of injuries plighted his progress and he spent more time on the sidelines than the left flank where he desperately wanted to be.

When Louis van Gaal said Shaw wasn’t fit enough during pre-season last year, a few surprised eyebrows were raised but to his credit, he accepted the criticism and moved on. Having now shed some weight during the off season, Shaw has put himself in the best possible position to attack the year.
As for Depay, it is the biggest year of his career to date. The decision to remain in the Eredivisie after a strong World Cup was the right one and helped him build the foundations of his reputation, one which is now on the line having joined United.
Depay’s drive and determination are two characteristics which should drive him towards greatness at United but there are no guarantees of success for any player.
However, both Depay and Shaw have put themselves in the driving seat of their own futures. Now it is up to them to make sure they steer themselves in the right direction.
