Manchester United’s pursuit of Matteo Darmian popped up out of the blue earlier this week but is already expected to be completed very soon.
Gianluca di Marzio has been at the forefront of reporting the latest updates in the Darmian story and he now reports the clubs are finalising negotiations over Torino’s asking price of €18m plus €2m in bonuses, so the deal could be completed today.
Given that United fans were unaware of any interest in Darmian until the last 72 hours, it comes as a surprise to hear how close the club is to signing a new right-back but it evokes happy memories of the times under Sir Alex Ferguson where no news came out of the club about transfers at all.
From everybody we have talked to who watched Darmian last year, there is a general consensus that he is one of the best right-backs to not be playing for one of Europe’s top five clubs at the moment – high praise indeed.
At €18m plus €2m for add-ons, Darmian would also be an absolute steal given he is a 25-year-old established defender when you consider how much Seamus Coleman would cost to any potential suitor.
By the sounds of it, United will be able to sign Darmian before they go out on the pre-season tour and that would be a real bonus, both for the player and his new team-mates, if only so they could get to know each other.
