Real Madrid have reached an agreement with Espanyol over the transfer of goalkeeper Kiko Casilla, according to AS.
Madrid, who have also been chasing Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea, are expected to complete the signing of Casilla before the weekend.
The report suggests that the club have come to an agreement with the player, while negotiations with Espanyol should be completed shortly.
Iker Casillas looks to be on his way to Porto so Madrid’s potential signing of a goalkeeper other than De Gea could have a huge impact at Man United.
Talks between Madrid and United over De Gea seem to have stalled so a new keeper at the Bernabeu could signal the end of the saga. With Keylor Navas already at Madrid, they have a stopper who can slot straight into the no.1 spot.
However, the fact that De Gea is a marked improvement on both Navas and Casilla may mean that Madrid continue their pursuit of United’s player of the season. United seem to be playing hardball with Madrid and are demanding a player in return for the Spaniard. The potential capture of Casilla could be a way of Madrid securing ‘insurance’, in case they are unable to prize De Gea away from Old Trafford.
Casilla’s arrival could also mean that Madrid president Florentino Perez is not as desperate to sign De Gea as first thought. The new signing could mean that the 10 times Champions League winners are happy to wait before bringing in De Gea on a free transfer next summer.
