Manchester City and Chelsea have reportedly joined Manchester United in the race to sign Argentinian defender Nicolas Otamendi.
Man United are on the lookout for a new centre-back to beef up their defence but one of their prime targets may be about to slip through their grasp.
Super Deporte in Spain have reported that United’s Premier League rivals, as well as Paris Saint-Germain, are also interested in signing Otamendi.
Following the 27-year-old’s impressive performances for Argentina at the Copa America, it is no surprise to see that a whole host of clubs want him in their side next season. However, Ed Woodward will have his work cut out for him if City, Chelsea and PSG are all in for Otamendi.
Any deal for the centre-back is part of a much larger saga, as far as United are concerned. Having already reportedly made a bid for Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos, it is not clear who United’s primary defensive target is.
United fans may feel that an agreement with Otamendi could mean that Ramos does not end up at Old Trafford. If reports are to be believed, this could also suggest that David De Gea will stay at the club next season.
This is a saga that is sure to drag for the majority of the summer. United simply must ensure that they are able to sign one of Otamendi or Ramos in order to avoid the defensive lapses that were so common last season.
