Bastian Schweinsteiger’s experience and leadership will be vital for Manchester United

Bastian Schweinsteiger has offered fans some insight into what role he hopes to play at Manchester United and made it clear that defence is his primary objective.

The 30-year-old has played as a box-to-box central midfield for the majority of his career but is equally as comfortable in the holding midfield role.

It’s a position in which only Michael Carrick, and Daley Blind for parts of last season at the start, have flourished and Schweinsteiger’s arrival gives United a world class alternative to Carrick which we haven’t had for a while.

There are some who feel Schweinsteiger will take some time to adapt to the Premier League but he is very confident in himself from the word go.

“I am confident,” Schweinsteiger said when asked about adapting to English football.

“My style of play is to control a game. You have to be smart in your brain and fast. For me it is very important to control a situation in defence. You can always score goals but you have to add stability in the defence.”

The terminology used here by Schweinsteiger makes it so clear why Louis van Gaal signed him. “Smart, brain, control, defence, stability.” As far as his philosophy goes, Schweinsteiger is clearly going to bring so much balance to United’s team.

That being said, it is still a little unclear as to whether Schweinsteiger will play in the deeper No.6 role or slightly further ahead in a more box-to-box position but one thing is for sure – he’ll make United’s midfield better by being part of it.

Schweinsteiger has won it all. He’s been to Champions League and World Cup finals and came out of the other side of them with a winners’ medal hanging around his neck.

That sort of leadership experience is something the squad drastically lacked last year and something which Schweinsteiger can bring in abundance.

It’s all about building a team who bonds together and compliments each other well and you get the feeling that Schweinsteiger’s presence in the team is just as much for the mental strength and approach he can bestow onto the players as it is his physical ability on the pitch.
