Manchester United’s Jonny Evans is closing in on a move to Everton in a deal worth a reported £8m.
Roberto Martinez is believed to be very interested in Evans because of his title winning experience and although a £10m price-tag is considered high, a fee around the £8m mark is expected to seal the deal.
The 27-year-old defender played an extremely minor role at Man United last season under Louis van Gaal and with only one year left on his contract, his 11-year carer at Old Trafford looks like it is coming to an end.
If Evans leaves for £8m, he will set a record by becoming Northern Ireland’s most expensive ever player and the writing has been on the wall for a long time with regards to his exit.
Paddy McNair, Tyler Blackett, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have all been given new contracts this year but Evans never received one. That’s as indicative as you can get when taking his future into account.
Evans was superb alongside Rio Ferdinand when Nemanja Vidic was ruled out for the season with a knee injury but he never built on that campaign. Instead, he stagnated and that’s what has frustrated United fans so much.
He’s got the credentials in his locker but it’s a case of finding the right manager to get that out of him. Is Martinez the one for him? Time will tell but by all accounts, it doesn’t look like he’ll be calling Old Trafford home for much longer.
Let us know what YOU think. Is selling Evans the right decision or do United need numbers in defence.
