Manchester United are expected to complete the signing of Mason Holgate over the weekend.
Wales Online reports that the 18-year-old Swansea City underwent a three day trial at Man United this week at Carrington and impressed enough to earn himself a permanent move to Old Trafford.
Holgate’s current contract expires next summer so it puts United in a position of power when it comes to pushing through a good deal as the League One side would not want to lose out on £1m.
A full-back by trade, Holgate would come straight into United’s U18s side but it wouldn’t be too long before he played with the U21s thanks to his age as he is already 18.
United’s recent academy graduate defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah went on to enjoy an excellent first season at the club and is currently away with the U21s on pre-season, which goes to show youngsters that progression is there for the right players.
Holgate could potentially follow that same sort of growth curve but what’s very important is that he is English and United have a historical tradition of promoting homegrown youngsters.
