Louis van Gaal insists that Manchester United’s new signings will have to fight for their places at the club regardless of their price tags.
The signings of Matteo Darmian, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay have strengthened United’s squad this season but the Dutchman insists they will have to earn the right to play in the United jersey.
Speaking to ManUtd.com, Van Gaal warned his new signings they needed to work hard to earn their place in his team.
“They know already that they have to fight for their position,” the Dutchman said.
“It’s never secure. Morgan has to fight with Schweinsteiger, Carrick, Blind… these are the players who can play in the centre of midfield.
“Darmian has to fight with Valencia. He knows that and Valencia knows that also. And Michael Carrick knows as well – I told him at the end of last season. The difficulty is to get these players – it’s not so easy – and I’m very proud, especially of Ed Woodward, that he’s done that.”
Van Gaal is saying this to make sure his players don’t become complacent at any point but all four players will be well aware they are in his first-team plans.
As long as all goes to plan during the preseason, all four will likely start in season’s opening game against Tottenham Hotspur.
The art of man management is something which Van Gaal has years of experience in and with so many new faces coming in to the squad, he’ll need to use all of his expertise to make sure his philosophy is taken to heart straight away.
