Louis van Gaal willing to gamble on Wayne Rooney’s fitness next season

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has indicated he would have no issue with Wayne Rooney being the club’s only recognised goalscorer next season.

Man United have let Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao leave Old Trafford this summer, meaning Rooney, Javier Hernandez and James Wilson have been left as the only strikers in the squad.

There have been suggestions that United are keen on signing Barcelona’s Pedro, who can play across the front line, while van Gaal has also stated Memphis Depay can play up top.

Van Gaal insisted he expects all areas of his squad to contribute next term but that there may be a “surprise” signing if a target becomes available.

Talking about the striker situation, van Gaal said: “We still have Rooney, he can play in the striker’s position, and all the media had written [he can] play there so I listened. Also Chicharito [Hernández] and maybe Wilson. Maybe there comes a surprise.”

When asked about Hernandez, van Gaal said: “Chicharito is coming on 25 July – he can prove himself again. Now Falcao and Van Persie are gone so his chances are better.”

There is no guarantee that Rooney will be fit for the entire season so van Gaal would certainly be taking a gamble if he did not bring another striker in.

Hernandez is better suited coming off the substitute’s bench, while Wilson is still raw and needs time to develop. Every successful United side in the past has had four top quality strikers so supporters may be uncomfortable with the club going into the next campaign with just Rooney up top.
