Luke Shaw impressed by Memphis Depay’s power and is looking forward to their partnership

Luke Shaw has been extremely impressed by the physicality of Memphis Depay so far in the early stages of his Manchester United career and is looking forward to their partnership on the left-wing this season.

Memphis Joined Man United from PSV Eindhoven in June following a staggering season with the Dutch club, where he scored 22 goals and contributed five assists in the Eredivisie.

Ever since returning for pre-season training, Shaw has been pictured numerous times with Memphis throughout the tour which is great to see as friendship is important for any successful partnership, as Gary Neville and David Beckham showed on the right-wing all those years ago.

Ahead of United’s game against San Jose Earthquakes, Shaw also spoke of his happiness at Memphis’ arrival.

Speaking to ManUtd.com he said: “He [Depay] is around my age and it is nice to have another player come in. You could say we have got on really well but it is just a team thing really. With him playing on the left, it’s a good thing. He’s a tank!

“You can see in the pictures he has got a massive physique. He is small but stocky and strong and quick, so he has been sharp in training. Like I said, he’s the same as me. I think he is just looking forward to getting the games under way.”

Having Shaw and Memphis firing on all cylinders would give United a superb threat on the left-wing. Ashley Young was excellent there last year but he had to do all of the work on his own as Shaw was unable to stay fit all year, hopefully that doesn’t happen again this year.

United’s history is built on youth and pace on the wings. From George Best and Cristiano Ronaldo to David Beckham and Ryan Giggs, wingers have typically been the foundation of United’s attacking philosophy and although neither Shaw or Memphis are traditional wingers in that mould, their ability on the left flank could be a very dangerous weapon next year for United.
