Louis van Gaal warns Marouane Fellaini over starting spot

by Sam Koster

Louis van Gaal has admitted Marouane Fellaini may struggle to break into the Manchester United team next season.

Fellaini fought his way into Van Gaal’s side last season and eventually became an integral part of the starting XI, netting vital goals against the likes of Manchester City along the way.

However, after being sent-off against Hull City, Fellaini will miss the first three games of next season, meaning he is not available for selection until Man United face Swansea City on the 30th August.

This has prompted Van Gaal to monitor other players instead of Fellaini, which was demonstrated as the Belgian international was left out of United’s game against Club America on Saturday.

He said: “Fellaini is suspended for the first three matches and he has longer to be ready, so I have to look at other players.”

Along with Andreas Pereira‘s breakthrough and the signings of Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger, it was always going to be harder for Fellaini to break into the team this season

However, his situation is made much harder by his suspension which means he will have to train exceptionally well if he is to displace Schneiderlin or Schweinsteiger.
