Fellaini fought his way into Van Gaal’s side last season and eventually became an integral part of the starting XI, netting vital goals against the likes of Manchester City along the way.
However, after being sent-off against Hull City, Fellaini will miss the first three games of next season, meaning he is not available for selection until Man United face Swansea City on the 30th August.
This has prompted Van Gaal to monitor other players instead of Fellaini, which was demonstrated as the Belgian international was left out of United’s game against Club America on Saturday.
He said: “Fellaini is suspended for the first three matches and he has longer to be ready, so I have to look at other players.”
However, his situation is made much harder by his suspension which means he will have to train exceptionally well if he is to displace Schneiderlin or Schweinsteiger.
