Wayne Rooney believes he can score 20+ goals for Manchester United next season

Wayne Rooney has every confidence in himself scoring 20 or more goals next season if given the opportunity to play up front.

The 29-year-old only managed only 14 goals last season after being forced to play in a deeper midfield role on numerous occasions in Louis van Gaal‘s first season as Manchester United manager.

It was not Rooney’s best position but Van Gaal felt there was a greater need for him to play in midfield and he wasn’t given a full season up front where he wants to play.

With the introduction of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin, Rooney can now fully concentrate on leading United’s front line and is confident he can return to his best.

“I have no doubts that I can score 20 goals or more again and I am ready to take on that mantle and be the one who gets the goals for this team,” Rooney said.

“If I play up there again this season, then I can get the goals. It is where I like and it is where I will play.”

Rooney might be confident but he has only scored 20 or more goals four times in his career and hasn’t done so for three years now, so there are no guarantees he’ll return to the 2011/12 striker who smashed in 34 goals.

However, the introduction of a much stronger midfield gives Rooney a better chance of making it happen because he won’t be tasked with dropping deeper to help any more. Instead, he can solely concentrate on scoring and that, in theory, should bring out the best in him.

As United’s main goal threat, Rooney needs to rediscover that kind of form in front of goal if his team are to mount a title challenge next season and he’ll be tasked with doing that by Van Gaal, regardless of whether a new striker arrives at the club or not.
