Barnsley chief concedes Mason Holgate is likely to join Manchester United

Barnsley manager Lee Johnson believes his side are destined to lose defender Mason Holgate to Manchester United following successful trials at Carrington.

The 18-year-old has trained with Man United recently and looks set to complete a £1 million transfer to the Premier League club in the near future, according to reports.

Holgate is predominantly a right-back but impressed at both centre-half and his favoured right-back position in 22 appearances for Barnsley last season.

Johnson is hoping that the young defender stays at the club but appears resigned to losing the player.

“There’s been a lot of interest in Mason and, at this stage it looks like we’re destined to lose him,” he said.

“But you never know what’s going to happen. The player can always change his mind.

“It’s great for the lad to be training with Manchester United, it’s a fantastic opportunity.

“But of course I want him to stay and really feel as though he could benefit from a full season in our first team.”

Johnson’s comments might be a way of getting the player on loan for the season before he finally joins up with his United teammates next season, should the transfer go through.

It is not uncommon for young players to delay moves to bigger clubs in favour of loan deals that helps with their development. In such scenarios, everyone is kept happy.

United would get their man with no fear of other clubs getting involved in a possible deal, Barnsley keep their player for another season and the player is given a year to develop further while coming to terms with moving to one of the biggest clubs in the world.
