Anders Lindegaard was also ruled out of the San Jose game, meaning Sam Johnstone had to play the full 90 minutes in California.
Van Gaal is optimistic that De Gea can play against Barcelona but didn’t offer any guarantees.
“I have a good hope that he can play against Barcelona but he was still injured [for the San Jose game],” van Gaal said.
“Lindegaard was also injured so it was difficult. I told David to go stand in the goal so we have a point of direction for my attackers, but don’t do anything to risk more injury because we have to build you up. I hope that he can play and I think he can.”
There have been rumours that De Gea’s absence has something to do with his potential move to Real Madrid but van Gaal’s comments appear to suggest he is genuinely injured.
Man United are reportedly refusing to sell De Gea to Madrid unless they get Sergio Ramos in return. Whatever happens, both De Gea and van Gaal will want the situation resolved as quickly as possible so they can focus on the new campaign.
