Manchester United transfer roundup: Deal to sign Sergio Romero agreed

by Ben Topliss

Here is the latest Manchester United transfer news and gossip.

Gazzetta Dello Sport in Italy today say Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Sergio Romero, the Argentinian goalkeeper who is now a free agent, on a three-year deal.

With Victor Valdes on his way out, Romero could come in as the new No.2 or, potentially, Louis van Gaal may see him as David de Gea‘s replacement.

Tuesday had been dominated by Louis van Gaal’s claims that he was in the “process” of signing a mystery striker but the Dutchman dismissed the rumours by Wednesday.

Speaking after Man United’s 3-1 win against San Jose Earthquakes, van Gaal revealed that the ‘surprise’ signing isn’t a striker at all.

There will be endless speculation over the identity of the player but the fact is that no-one really knows what the situation is.

Elsewhere, United are said to be closing in on a move for Sergio Romero, who is expected to replace Victor Valdes at Old Trafford after he fell out with van Gaal.

In terms of outgoings, Angel di Maria looks like he is on his way out of the club as Paris Saint-Germain will reportedly submit a £45m bid for the Argentine by this weekend.

Finally, Reece James has completed a move to Wigan Athletic on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee. The youngster was highly regarded by coaches at United but van Gaal doesn’t seem to have been convinced by him.
