Player ratings: Manchester United 3-1 San Jose Earthquakes

Player ratings: Manchester United 3-1 San Jose Earthquakes

Sam Johnstone 8 Once again, looked at home in goal. Quick off his line and efficient distribution from the back

Matteo Darmian 7 Comfortable at full-back and began to express himself going forward

Phil Jones 7 Not really troubled and managed to cover for United’s high defensive line

Daley Blind 6 Found himself in awkward positions for a centre-back and never seemed to settle

Luke Shaw 8 Constantly made his way up and down the left wing and was a constant threat. Defensively resolute as well

Morgan Schneiderlin 6 Started well by retaining the ball but will be disappointed with the part he played in the Earthquakes first goal

Michael Carrick 7 Rarely put a foot wrong and even began to show his attacking side. Got forward on occasion

Juan Mata 9 United’s most threatening player and notched a goal for his efforts. Always seemed to make something happen in the final third

Memphis Depay 8 Bagged his first United goal after instinctive closing down, could have done better with other chances

Ashley Young 6 Found himself in good positions but final ball let him down on more than one occasion

Wayne Rooney 7 Didn’t receive much service but managed to hold the ball up well when played into feet

Second half

Paddy McNair 7 Got forward on occasion but was unable to really make an impact at either end

Chris Smalling 6 Looked shaky to start with and made some questionable passes near his own goal

Jonny Evans 7 An improvement from the first game, looked calm and composed on the ball

Tyler Blackett 6 Struggled again and never seemed to keep track of runners on his wing

Ander Herrera 6 Failed to establish himself in midfield and the game seemed to pass him by

Bastian Schweinsteiger 7 Quietly dictated play

Jesse Lingard 7 Struggled for the majority of the half but recorded the assist for Pereira’s goal with a good cross

Adnan Januzaj 6 Wasteful and didn’t seem confident enough to take a man on, instead always looked for the safer option

Andreas Pereira 9 United’s liveliest player in the second half and scored his first goal after some brilliant movement. Brought life to the front four

James Wilson 6 Never imposed himself and was devoid of service to help him out
