Gary Neville backs Luke Shaw to become huge player for Manchester United

Gary Neville has backed Luke Shaw to be a ‘huge player’ for Manchester United in the future and is confident Matteo Darmian can also prove himself to be a great signing this season.

During the game against San Jose Earthquakes yesterday, Neville, a perennial right-back at the club, was asked about new signing Darmian but was quick to point out how important Shaw would be at United.

While Louis van Gaal has said that Antonio Valencia will the start the season at right-back due to the player featuring there for most of last season, it is surely only a matter of time before the young Italian will step in at the position.

At least, that’s what fans believe having watched Darmian in action over the first two pre-season games.

Shaw struggled with fitness during his first year at the club following a record breaking £30 million transfer fee from Southampton last summer.

He said himself that he was given a shock as to how big United really are and took time adjusting but seems to have ironed out any creases in his approach to being Van Gaal’s left-back.

An off-season training camp of his own card looks to have done wonders for Shaw’s fitness this pre-season and although it is too early to properly judge Shaw for the season, the early signs are that this will be a much more fruitful campaign for the young Englishman.
