Louis van Gaal hails captain Wayne Rooney: “I could not expect more”

by Robbie Dunne

Louis van Gaal has praised Wayne Rooney and admitted he has exceeded his expectations as the captain of Manchester United.

The Dutch manager appointed Rooney as his captain upon arrival at Old Trafford and has watched the player grow into the role in his year at the club.

Former manager Sir Alex Ferguson and Wayne Rooney had quite a disjointed relationship with the player asking for a transfer on no less than two occasions and Ferguson making it public, it appears that Van Gaal and Rooney have no such problems.

Speaking at the latest press conference on United’s North American tour, Van Gaal let it be known how proud he is of Rooney’s role as captain.

“I could not expect more,” said the United manager.

“I think he is a great captain, better than I had expected. He is fully accepted by the players and that’s also very important because I can choose but the players decide.

“That’s my philosophy: the players have to accept the captains and the first captain is Wayne Rooney and the second captain is Michael Carrick and, last year, the third captain was [Chris] Smalling.”

There were lots of fans who felt Rooney was not suitable for the role when Van Gaal gave it to him but to be fair to the 29-year-old, the players seem to more than have accepted him as captain.

This season is particularly important for United and Van Gaal will need Rooney to lead by example up front, so this will be a real measure of his abilities in the captain role but the Dutchman has every confidence in Rooney to deliver.
