Laurent Blanc confirms Angel di Maria is close to joining Paris St Germain

Paris Saint-Germain manager Lauren Blanc has confirmed his side are closing in on the transfer of Angel Di Maria.

The 27-year-old has been widely linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer and rumours of a potential exit were only intensified when the Argentine international failed to turn up prior to Manchester United’s friendly against FC Barcelona.

After initially impressing fans, Di Maria endured a disappointing end to his debut season in England and was eventually usurped to his position by Ashley Young, a move that saw the player confined to the bench more often than not.

Blanc has now confirmed there have been talks between the two clubs regarding a potential switch for the player.

He said: “There is a good possibility [he could sign] but there is nothing official,” Blanc told reporters.

“There is an anticipation he is going to come to the US but as to which jersey he is going to wear, we don’t know yet.

“If he does make a change hopefully it will be for Paris Saint-Germain. Right now we have to wait because there are two big clubs out there in discussion.

“Of course PSG is out looking in terms of recruiting an offensive player, whether it is Di Maria or somebody else. Of course a coach would like to see somebody like him but there is nothing official at this moment.”

On the one hand, it is hard not to accept that Di Maria has had a tough start to life in England. His family’s unhappiness, coupled with an attempted burglary on his house, have seemingly pushed the player towards a switch to the French capital.

However, to not turn up for the tour when asked shows a clear disrespect towards the club and if Louis van Gaal has his way, Di Maria will have likely played his last game for Man United.

In terms of a potential replacement for the Argentine, Pedro has been linked to United on many occasions in recent weeks, and a player that scored six goals and contributed six assists in only 15 La Liga starts last term, would go some way in filling the void left by Di Maria.
