Gerard Pique: Pedro exit would weaken Barcelona

by Robbie Dunne

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has revealed he wants Pedro to remain at the Camp Nou amid strong rumours he is set to join Manchester United.

Pedro has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks after the player successfully renegotiated his release clause down from €150m to €30m.

Pedro scored six goals and made six assists in only 15 La Liga starts last term, but has found it hard to cement a regular spot in the first team due to the arrival of Luis Suarez from Liverpool last summer.

Speaking about his fellow countryman, Pique expressed his desire to see Pedro remain at Barcelona for the coming season.

“I understand that a player like Pedro wants to have more minutes. He’s been a world champion, won many trophies in Barcelona and behind three of the best players in the world,” he said.

“I hope he stays because he’s an amazing player and gives very good performances. If he does go, he’ll weaken the squad because he has a lot of quality.”

Man United fans are divided in their opinion of Pedro, with some believing that a bigger name such as Marco Reus or Antoine Griezmann must be bought in if Angel Di Maria is to leave the club. This is especially pertinent considering Louis van Gaal recently confirmed his desire to bring a blockbuster signing to United.

Pedro’s talents are often overshadowed by the likes of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Suarez at Barca but the fact is that the Spanish international has played for many years at the highest level. The reported price of £22.8m is very modest, and many fans forget that the 27-year-old is a former World Cup and Champions League winner, and therefore has the pedigree to play at United.
