Nicolas Otamendi has returned to training with Valencia despite strong rumours linking him with a move to Manchester United.
The 27-year-old has been the subject of a long transfer saga this summer, with various sources reporting that the player is unhappy in Spain and has his heart set on a move to Man United. However, the player was all smiles as he rejoined Valencia to take part in their pre-season tour.
There has also been interest from Manchester City, although reports suggest that both Manchester clubs have baulked at the Argentine’s release clause of £35m.
Man United fans feel that if Sergio Ramos cannot be attained this summer, then Otamendi is the next best thing. The Argentine international was a vital cog in Valencia’s team last season and helped them finish in an impressive fourth position, with only 32 goals conceded.
Louis van Gaal must make his mind up soon. If City were to sign Otamendi, they would have addressed another weak-spot in their team, leaving them with, on paper, a title-challenging squad.
Considering some of Daley Blind‘s shaky performances in central defence during pre-season, United would be wise to act quickly in the transfer market.
