Widespread reports all say Manchester United are close to agreeing a £22.8m deal to bring FC Barcelona winger Pedro Rodriguez to Old Trafford.
That chain of thought certainly ties into what Van Gaal told the national press this week about how confident he was with the squad.
When asked about the 1-0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, he said: “I’m thinking at that time, they have Hazard, he can always make goals, he can always make an action and decide a goal. Manchester City have Agüero, it’s the same type. Barcelona has Messi, Neymar and Suárez. We as Manchester United have to compete with these clubs. So we have to look also for that kind of players.
“When it is possible to buy for a reasonable price players from that level we shall do that. So with Schneiderlin, with Schweinsteiger, with Depay, with Darmian we are better than last year. But we have to be much more better and I say to you that is the creativity of my players in the front.”
Van Gaal is completely right in that United haven’t really signed anybody to replace Cristiano Ronaldo at the club and although Pedro has been impressive for Barcelona over the years, is he the sort of player who could lift his team on his own accord.
The arrival of Pedro would be a superb piece of business but by all accounts, it sounds like the Barcelona winger was not first on Van Gaal’s radar which begs the question of who is?
Gareth Bale is a name who jumps out immediately but as difficult as negotiations have been for Sergio Ramos, they would have been even more difficult for the Welshman who has become a superstar in his own right out in Madrid.
United certainly have the finances to fund a signing like that, especially if Angel di Maria leaves for Paris St Germain, so it is more a case of who is attainable than anything else and that could be where the problem lies this summer.
Who do you think is Louis van Gaal‘s perfect signing?
