Manchester United set to sign young Italian defender Luca Ercolani

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United are set to sign another talented youngster in Italy U16s centre-back Luca Ercolani, according to reports.

Ercolani, 15, had a trial at Man United last summer having been spotted by David Williams, the scout who was responsible for bringing both Giuseppi Rossi and Federico Macheda to Manchester.

Both Rossi and Macheda enjoyed superb careers with United’s academy sides but neither were able to break through and into the first-team on a regular basis under Sir Alex Ferguson, although both certainly had their moments.

Interest in Ercolani looks to have been followed up by United who are willing to pay Ercolani’s club, Serie D side Forli, a fee of €50,000 to sign him. The reports go on to say Forli want €100,000 plus signing on fees and bonuses should Ercolani go on to have a successful career.

As Ercolani isn’t 16, FIFA regulations restrict him from signing a professional agreement but he comes of age in November and that is when the move would be finalised.

United have already brought in Italian right-back Matteo Darmian from Torino FC this summer and it looks like Ercolani could follow suit later this year.

The modern day academy of any football club should blend homegrown players with bringing in talent from other countries and United are certainly no strangers to that concept, having brought in numerous youngsters from around the world in recent years.
