If you asked Manchester United before the summer transfer window opened to choose one position which the club needed to strengthen the most, 99% would have said at centre-back.
Reports have linked Sergio Ramos and Nicolas Otamendi with moves to Man United all summer but with four weeks left to go until the window closes, no centre-back has been signed by Louis van Gaal.
Now, Mike Keegan from the Daily Mail suggests that United are only interested in signing Ramos and will not pursue other targets if a move for him fails.
That would leave Van Gaal will Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Jonny Evans as his four senior centre-back options with the likes of Daley Blind, Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett also available.
Surely it would be a massive oversight by Van Gaal to invest in excess of £100m into building a new squad and not strengthen the one position which caused him so many problems last season?
It’s hard to believe, especially given how smart the club has been so far in the transfer window.
The problem lies in the fact all of United’s defenders are injury prone and will spend time on the sidelines next year. In terms of building momentum, it makes it almost impossible with a defence that changes from game to game.
Could centre-back become the new central midfield in being a position where fans are crying out for the club to sign somebody but nobody ever comes in?
