Manchester United’s diverse goalscorers on tour show some strength in the squad

by Robbie Dunne

Manchester United may be suffering from a crisis at the striker position but there have been plenty of players in other positions willing to step up to the plate in the absence of an out and out striker.

United have won the first three games of their preseason tour against Club America, San Jose Earthquakes and Barcelona.

In those games, they have scored a total of seven goals and each one has been scored by a different player which shows some fantastic quality in the squad.

Morgan Schneiderlin, Juan Mata, Memphis Depay, Andreas Pereira, Wayne Rooney, Jesse Lingard and Adnan Januzaj have all got on the scoresheet for United in recent weeks and what is most pleasing is that the younger players with points to prove have responded well to the new-found competition within the squad.

United are lucky in a sense that they have several attack minded players with the size and speed to play in the striker role depending on how Louis van Gaal decides to select his team and formation.

Wayne Rooney is the purest goalscorer in the squad and will likely start the season at striker but Memphis is not immune to playing as No.9 and even Juan Mata has stated he wouldn’t mind playing as a striker if the situation called for it.

Javier Hernandez is yet to feature this summer and a lot will depend on how Van Gaal deploys the Mexican and with plenty of time left in the transfer window, there is still time to find a striker who can contribute immediately.

Regardless of who United do or do not sign, it appears that there are plenty of goals within the squad and if Louis van Gaal plays his cards right, United could be a free-flowing, goal scoring juggernaut this season.
