Manchester United arrive back in the UK following their pre-season tour

Manchester United have now landed back in the UK after flying home following the conclusion of their US pre-season tour.

Although the tour ended on a sour note with a 2-0 defeat to Paris St-Germain, there were plenty of positives to take away from the two week trip.

Three wins from four games, including a convincing 3-1 win over Barcelona, saw lots of United’s players thrive including a lot of academy graduates which was fantastic to see.

Sean Goss, a 19-year-old midfielder, was able to make his senior debut in the game against PSG while all four outfield signings also made their debut.

Overall, Van Gaal will be happy with how the tour went given that no player suffered a serious injury but he still has lots to sort out before the season opener against Tottenham Hotspur.

United’s defence looked extremely suspect in the 2-0 loss to PSG and it won’t fill fans with much confidence if a new centre-back isn’t brought in this summer.

It was a problem area in the squad last season but Van Gaal’s insistence on playing Daley Blind in the role might very well mean he has decided to stick with his current options, despite the fact Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Jonny Evans are all extremely injury prone.

In attack, United look a far more complete team and although Matteo Darmian has strengthened the defence, as has Luke Shaw following an upturn in form, the centre-back positions are still considered a big problem.
