Manchester United’s academy sides have some great prospects coming through the ranks at the moment and none more so than 14-year-old Angel Gomes.
The son of former Portuguese U21s international, Gil Gomes, Angel is making great strides through United’s academy.
Throughout his young career to date, Gomes has always mingled with players above his age level. When he was 12 he played with the U14s, when he was 13 he played with the U17s and in that sense it comes as no surprise to hear he has travelled with United’s U18s this week.
However, when you look at that objectively, it’s indicative of just how highly rated Gomes is. Coaches at every level recognise his qualities and feel he is years ahead of his age group and it’s great to see him continuing the progression all the time.
In the recent Manchester Premier Cup, Gomes came away with the Most Valuable Player trophy despite the fact United finished 12th and he only scored one goal. It was his overall touch and technique which earned him the award.
Gomes is far from the finished product and at 14 fans should not expect to see him in the first-team any time soon but with so much scrutiny being aimed towards United’s current academy problems, players like Gomes go to show there is still lots of quality in the ranks.
