Johnstone, who appeared in all of Man United’s games on their pre-season tour, is looking like he’ll return to Preston where he made 25 appearances last season.
With the ongoing saga regarding David De Gea still not any closer to completion, Johnstone will be unsure of where he is in the pecking order at United. The signing of Sergio Romero may have been enough to convince the 22-year-old that his immediate future should be elsewhere.
Having impressed on tour, Johnstone will be confident that he has played his way into Louis van Gaal‘s thinking. The ‘keeper was quick off his line whenever he played and made plenty of good saves. However, it doesn’t look like he has any immediate opportunity to come into United’s first-team squad.
Johnstone was a key part in helping Preston gain promotion last year and he will be hoping that his good form continues. Now in the Championship, Preston will provide a much sterner test for Johnstone that it did last year.
It is crucial that the Englishman uses his loan spell as an opportunity to prove to Van Gaal that there should be a place for him at United.
