De Gea has been linked with a move back to Spain for a number of months and the transfer saga has dragged on all summer.
The situation finally looks like it is coming close to a resolution as van Gaal has told Man United to sell the keeper to Madrid.
Van Gaal was said to be angry with De Gea’s disinterested performance against Paris Saint-Germain this week.
Of course, no-one wants to see De Gea leave and in an ideal world he would sign a new contract and stay.
But it is clear that he wants to leave and with the new Premier League season rapidly approaching, it will be good to remove the uncertainty surrounding the situation.
There can be no distractions when United play Tottenham Hotspur and the team cannot afford to have De Gea put in another lackadaisical display. It will be better to have someone in goal who actually wants to wear the shirt.
