Rafael closing in on Manchester United exit

by Sid Choudhary

Manchester United full-back Rafael da Silva has all but confirmed he is on his way out of the club this summer.

The Brazilian found opportunities extremely few and far between since Louis van Gaal took the helm as manager and the arrival of Matteo Darmian pushed him even further down the pecking order.

L’Equipe are reporting that Rafael could join Lyon this summer in a deal worth just €3m which seems very under-priced but well in line with United’s tradition of receiving poor fees for outgoing players.

On Twitter, Rafael gave a big hint that he is indeed on his way out with a message to one of his followers who wished him well.

Rafael burst onto the scene at United seven years ago and has been a fans’ favourite throughout. The 25-year-old was, quite obviously, shunned down the pecking order by Van Gaal because he never seemed to trust him and unfortunately for him, his United career has petered out very quickly.

Despite not seeing him out on the pitch very often, many United fans still wanted Rafael to start at right-back last season, ahead of Antonio Valencia.

However, with the stigning of Matteo Darmian from Torino, another right-back, Rafael seemed to get the final nail in the coffin.

After his agent confirmed he was looking for a new club, Rafael’s future has been uncertain and it now looks like a case of when and not if he leaves Old Trafford this summer
