Ashley Young agrees new Manchester United deal – report

by Robbie Dunne

Ashley Young has agreed a new three-year deal at Manchester United, according to ESPN.

The 30-year-old England international had been linked with a move away from Man United recently but the new contract will surely mean that Young will retire at the club he joined from Aston Villa in 2011.

Young was a revelation at Aston Villa but struggled to break into United’s starting XI for the first few years of his spell at the club. He was hampered, to an extent, by his versatility having been tried in several different positions at Old Trafford.

However, his versatility was utilised perfectly by Louis van Gaal last season as he was deployed as a left wing-back in the notorious 3-5-2 formation.

Young had entered the final year of his contract and many saw this as a good time to sell the player but van Gaal obviously has plans for him next season.

Young was largely responsible for keeping Angel di Maria out of the United team in the second half of last season and provided a much better option for the Dutch manager as the team battled for the fourth and last Champions League spot in the Premier League.

United have several new options at attacking midfield and will, most likely, not play a 3-5-2 formation next season. If Young can improve on last season and hold his own then there is no reason that the 30-year-old can not become a leader and starter for van Gaal in his second season as manager of the club.
