Manchester United will open their Premier League campaign by hosting Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford in just under five days time.
With Louis van Gaal confirming the inclusion of Luke Shaw, Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind in his starting XI against Spurs, it is expected that one of either Phil Jones or Chris Smalling will fill in at right-centre-back.
With Morgan Schneiderlin and Michael Carrick featuring alongside one another at various points during United’s pre-season tour, it is widely expected that fans will see more of the same against Spurs. However, this would leave Bastian Schweinsteiger on the bench, which could be unlikely following the German international’s solid performances during pre-season.
One big focus during the game will be on Memphis Depay‘s position.
The 21-year-old was widely expected to replace Ashley Young and feature on the left-wing during the majority of the new season, but Van Gaal has instead deployed the Dutchman in a more central role during United’s tour of the US, something which has divided fans opinion.
With the potential of Schneiderlin and Carrick both in holding midfield roles, United’s first game would see them field a midfield pairing which would finally bring the balance Van Gaal so desperately demanded at United during last season.
What do you think about the lineup? Should Ander Herrera start? Should Memphis be played centrally or in a wide role? Is a midfield duo of Carrick and Schneiderlin too slow?
