Victor Valdes treatment upsets Manchester United’s Spanish players – report

by Sam Koster

When Victor Valdes arrived at Manchester United in January 2015, many saw it as Louis van Gaal preparing a replacement for David de Gea if left in the summer.

Yet, in a turn of events which nobody expected, Valdes is now closer to leaving United than De Gea and potentially in not so rosy circumstances.

Van Gaal has already publicly criticised Valdes for refusing to play certain games with United’s U21s, to which he responded, questioning the Dutchman’s comments, and the latest reports from the Daily Mail suggest it could be turning sour quickly.

The report states that Man United’s Spanish-speaking players, which include Juan Mata and Ander Herrera, are unhappy with the treatment of Valdes by Van Gaal after he moved the goalkeeper’s gear to the U21s dressing room.

Van Gaal has shown an iron fist whenever necessary at United and it has earned the respect of the players but there is a suggestion that this certain instance with Valdes could have wider implications with Herrera and Mata as they felt it was ‘disrespectful’ to somebody so experienced.

Valdes has certainly been in and around United’s U21s this week having been pictured with 16-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Ilias Moutha-Sebtaoui, but whether there is any substance to these claims remain to be seen.

It should be noted here that Van Gaal has clashes with players at all of his clubs – Rivaldo at Barcelona and Luca Toni at Bayern Munich will confirm this – but it will be interesting to see what Valdes says once he completes his exit so as to find out what went on.
