Manchester United’s potential Champions League opponents in their crucial qualifier have now been confirmed as Lazio, Club Brugge, Monaco, CSKA Moscow and Rapid Vienna.
Monaco proceeded to the qualifier round after beating Young Boys 7-1 on aggregate while Rapid Vienna defied the odds to overcome Ajax and secure their own spot in the draw.
By knocking Ajax out, Rapid Vienna ensured Man United could not be drawn against Sporting Lisbon as the Portuguese side have now replaced Ajax as a seeded team.
CSKA Moscow beat Sparta Prague 5-4 on aggregate and Club Brugge eased past Panathinaikos to complete the draw.
There was a possibility that United would have to play against Fenerbahce, who now have Robin van Persie and Nani, but they were beaten comfortably 3-0 by Shakhtar Donetsk.
Overall, it’s a draw which certainly favours United in every fixture as the heavy favourites but a potentially long round trip to CSKA Moscow or a tricky away tie in Rome to Lazio are certainly not guarantees.
Louis van Gaal‘s objective last season was to return United to the Champions League and he is now just a two-legged tie away from achieving that, so there’s immense pressure on the team to perform in these games. Losing simply isn’t an option.
The draw will take place at 11am on Friday 7 August and we’ll bring you news of our opponents as soon as we have it.
