Manchester United made a slow start to the Premier League season last year and will be looking to avoid a repeat this time around.
Louis van Gaal’s side take on Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Saturday with a new weight of expectation following a busy summer in terms of transfers.
New additions Memphis Depay, Matteo Darmian and Morgan Schneiderlin will all likely start against Spurs, but van Gaal may prefer to give Michael Carrick the nod in midfield as he had more minutes on the pitch than Bastian Schweinsteiger during the pre-season tour.
Elsewhere, Juan Mata should start on the right wing assuming United do not complete the signing of Barcelona’s Pedro in time for the clash.
It is a strong team and a marked improvement on last season. Perhaps best of all is the fact that Wayne Rooney can now flourish up top.
The United captain often had to provide cover in the middle of the park last term but the arrival of Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger will give Rooney the opportunity to finally play week in, week out as a striker.
