The manager confirmed that Schweinsteiger will not start due to join a lack of match practice.
Schweinsteiger, who made three appearances on Man United’s pre-season tour of the United States, has endeared himself to the Old Trafford faithful but he will not get his full home debut quite yet.
“Schweinsteiger came also at the last moment out of his holidays so I don’t think he is fit enough. We have to build the fitness he needs,” van Gaal said.
Amid claims from Schweinsteiger’s old manager, Bayern Munich’s Pep Guardiola, that the World Cup winner has not been fully fit for three years, the German captain will be looking to prove his doubters wrong.
Having joined up with the United squad later than the majority of the players, it’s no surprise that Schweinsteiger is not yet up to full fitness.
However, United fans will be hoping this does not become a common theme. After completing such a high-profile transfer, supporters of the club will be waiting with baited breath to see Schweinsteiger in the Premier League for the first time.
