Fans’ view: Are you happy that Memphis Depay is Manchester United’s new No.7?

by Ben Topliss

Manchester United’s famous No.7 shirt has become something of a poisoned chalice in recent years, with the likes of Angel di Maria, Michael Owen and Antonio Valencia failing to impress with the number on their backs.

Before them, players such as George Best, Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham and Eric Cantona had lit up Old Trafford wearing the shirt.

The latest player to be given the honour is Memphis Depay, and it seems the confident youngster will not be fazed by the pressure that comes with it.

We asked our Twitter followers whether or not they were happy that Memphis has been given the shirt:

Memphis has the world at his feet and he has the confidence to back up his exceptional talent.

Of course, there is a fine line between confidence and arrogance but all top athletes need that aspect to their personality if they are to succeed.

In any case, Louis van Gaal and the coaching staff at United will keep his feet firmly on the ground. Memphis will be hoping to grab a goal on his competitive debut when Tottenham Hotspur visit Old Trafford on Saturday.
