Guillermo Varela joins Manchester United first-team training

Not much has been heard about Guillermo Varela this summer since his return from a season on loan at Real Madrid’s Castilla side, but he’s now back and training with Manchester United.

The 22-year-old joined up with first-team training ahead of the Tottenham Hotspur game and it’s great to see him back in action.

With Rafael da Silva now gone and Antonio Valencia still being Antonio Valencia, United only have one natural right-back in Matteo Darmian.

Could Varela come back into the squad and play as Darmian’s back-up? Louis van Gaal must have some sort of plan with him, otherwise he surely would have simply asked him to train with the U21s.

Zinedine Zidane, Real Madrid Castilla coach, was full of praise for Varela during his loan spell in Spain, so he must have seen something in him.

If Varela doesn’t go out on loan, it will be interesting to see how much game-time he would get this season, if any at all because in terms of strength in depth, the squad could really do with another right-back.
