De Gea was deemed not to be in the right frame of mind to feature in the clash due to the ongoing speculation surrounding his future.
Instead, Sergio Romero was handed his debut and the Argentine pulled off some important saves.
Van Gaal insisted he wants to keep De Gea but hinted that Man United could be tempted to sell if a big money offer came in.
“Of course. We have to pay a lot of money for the players we want so we want to sell at the same level when we have to sell,” Van Gaal said.
“We want to keep him, of course. He has been voted the best player here for the last two years.”
Nobody wants to see De Gea leave the club but the saga is now becoming tiresome in the extreme.
The uncertainty will also not help things on the pitch as United look to make a good start to the campaign. The transfer window shuts in three weeks but the hope is that De Gea’s future is sorted out before then.
