Darmian played in his natural right-back position and caused Tottenham all sorts of problems on the right flank, both in attack and defence.
Going forward, Darmian always made himself available for a pass or on the overlap for Juan Mata and that gave Spurs’ defence a real headache.
It was a very accomplished performance from Darmian and one that certainly caught the eye of Van Gaal.
“I liked the performance of Matteo Darmian,” Van Gaal said after the game.
“He played a good match in the Spurs half and when they had the ball, plus he didn’t lose the ball much and was very good in his ball position with the opponent. When I have to think of one player, it’s him, as he was the best performer.”

Darmian showed United fans the importance of having a top quality right-back and how much of an impact it can make on the dynamic of the whole team.
That gave Van Gaal’s side a constant threat out wide which stretched the game and create space elsewhere which ultimately proved fruitful with United winning 1-0.
It’s early for Darmian at United but the signs so far suggest he has what it take to become a very accomplished right-back in no time at all.
