Van Gaal: We’ve done everything with De Gea

Louis van Gaal has said he and his staff at Manchester United did everything they could to focus David de Gea ahead of the Tottenham Hotspur game but said they were unable to help him.

De Gea’s head isn’t in the right place currently because Man United are refusing to sell him to Real Madrid because they won’t match United’s valuation.

His desire to join Real Madrid is the worst kept secret in football but the stalemate regarding his future has affected him to the point where Van Gaal isn’t comfortable playing him.

Speaking ahead of the Spurs game, Van Gaal said: “Me and the staff have tried everything with David de Gea to focus him but we have seen it is difficult for him.”

It doesn’t sound like United are in a very good situation with De Gea. So far this summer, Ed Woodward has stood firm with Real Madrid and has taken a strong hand in negotiations but is the situation still to United’s advantage? Arguably not.

If De Gea does leave now, then United will have to find a replacement within three weeks unless Sergio Romero is going to be that man, or potentially youngster Sam Johnstone.

Either way, De Gea obviously has one half of his mind in Real Madrid and it’s a surprise to see him affected by it because he is typically an excellent professional.

Will De Gea be a United player come September? At this point, nobody knows.
