Juan Mata is excited to see how quickly Manchester United’s new signings have settled into the club.
Man United’s season opener against Spurs saw a 1-0 win crowned by accomplished performances from all five debutants, with the pick of the bunch being Darmian’s stellar display at right-back.
Writing in his weekly blog, Mata outlined how pleased he was with the display from van Gaal’s new signings.
“There were a few positive things apart from the score. Old Trafford saw the debut of many new players, and personally I think all of them had a good performance,” wrote Mata.
“It’s exciting to see how quickly they get settled and the warm welcome they got from our supporters!”
A United debut is always a daunting experience. With the prying eyes of the football world firmly upon you, many players sink into neurotic indifference.
However, all five signings can take immense confidence from their debuts against Spurs. While nobody set the world alight, it was an assured performance all round that grew in stature as the game went on.
However, as many have showed (Angel Di Maria is a fitting recent example), a convincing home debut doesn’t translate into a prosperous career.
Next week’s encounter at Villa Park will be an arguably sterner test for Van Gaal’s new boys, as they experience a Premier League away game in a United shirt for the first time.
