It was widely expected that Man United would be bringing in some defensive reinforcements in the transfer window in what was considered one of the weakest positions in the squad.
All summer we’ve been widely linked to the likes of Sergio Ramos, Nicolas Otamendi and Mats Hummels but so far nobody has been signed.
However, with three weeks left to go until the transfer window closes, Van Gaal still has his eye out for somebody.
Van Gaal wants to bring in a world class, established centre-back and will not settle for anything less but in the current market that is very difficult.
Real Madrid have been insistent that Ramos is going nowhere, United clearly don’t want to pay Otamendi’s €50m release clause and Hummels committed his future to Borussia Dortmund. Outside of those three, there aren’t too many established centre-backs who could potentially move this summer.
United do need a new centre-back because at one point this season the current quartet of Jones, Smalling, Rojo and Evans will send the club into an injury crisis which sees Blind and Carrick play in defence. Given the amount of investment elsewhere in the squad, it would be a huge oversight if that happened.
It is a tough ask to sign a player of that quality at this stage in the window but until the window closes, there is still time.
