Guillermo Varela scored a superb solo goal for Manchester United’s U21s in their 1-1 draw with Leicester City last night (see video at top).
Coming in from the right flank, Varela took it past a Leicester defender with some neat footwork before sweeping home a good finish on his weaker left foot.
The 22-year-old Uruguayan hasn’t yet had an opportunity at right-back within Man United’s first team but scoring goals like that will certainly do his chances no harm.
Varela spent last year on loan at Real Madrid’s Castilla side and earned high praise from their coach Zinedine Zidane, who said he expected Varela to go on and be a successful player in the future. Any praise from Zidane is worth listening to, so he must have made a good impression
Strangely enough, Varela wasn’t given a squad number by Louis van Gaal so it doesn’t look like there are any immediate plans for him to join up with the first-team squad but he has been training with them, which is altogether a confusing situation.
When Matteo Darmian came off for Antonio Valencia against Tottenham Hotspur, it didn’t take the South American long to make some mistakes and lose his man, and that surprised nobody.
Valencia is a not a right-back and never will be, so do you think Varela should be given a chance in that position ahead of him?
