From Spain: Nicolas Otamendi’s move to Manchester United is now close

by Sam Peoples

At the start of the summer, Nicolas Otamendi was the talk of the town for Manchester United fans.

Reports all linked the Valencia defender with a move to Old Trafford but ever since he participated in the Copa America this summer, they faded into the background.

Interest in Sergio Ramos then took over and has grabbed everybody’s attention but now that he has signed a new contract with Real Madrid, focus has turned straight back to Otamendi, especially after the latest reports coming out of Spain.

They suggest Otamendi is close to securing a move to the Premier League and the club are leading the chase for him are Man United.

According to those who know SillasGol, they are a renowned collection of Valencia based journalists with a credible reputation.

Director Koh Kim Huat has been spotted at Valencia’s offices today but whether that has anything to do with Otamendi is unknown at this point in time.

All summer, it has been a well known fact that Otamendi has had a €50m release clause but there has been no club who are willing to pay that.

Ed Woodward has been very canny this summer with his negotiations for the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Matteo Darmian, so it remains to be seen whether United are willing to pay his full release clause.

However, one thing is for sure – United are in need of a new centre-back. An injury to Phil Jones has only served to further expose how weak the squad is in that area and 27-year-old Otamendi would arguably be the most important purchase this summer if it was completed.
