Michael Carrick never considered leaving Manchester United this summer

Michael Carrick has insisted he never thought about leaving Manchester United this summer despite rumoured interest from Newcastle United, Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain.

Carrick, who signed a new contract earlier this year, is widely regarded to be one of the most influential players at Man United.

However, rumours surrounding the 34-year-old’s future circulated following the summer arrivals of Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Carrick rubbished suggestions he could leave United and insisted that he wants to stay at Old Trafford for a “long time”.

When asked if other clubs were interested in him, Carrick said: “Yes, (but) it (leaving) is not something I thought about at all. It has never been an issue.”

“At this stage, you just have to judge it year by year. Looking at the players who have been here in the past that is what they have done when they reached this age. They have gone year-on-year and played for a long time. At the moment I feel fine and great, it just depends how it goes.”

The likes of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs have previously flourished in their later years at United and there is no reason why Carrick cannot do the same.

Of course, he will have to be used properly and sparingly and may have to adapt his game as time goes on. But Carrick has never really relied on pace, instead using his excellent intelligence on the pitch to get in the right positions.
